Radioactive Waste Disposal

Quick Answer

Dispose of Radioactive Waste by putting the barrel in a backpack, travelling to the Dumping Grounds after closing, and moving it from BACKPACK to GROUND.

Dispose of Radioactive Waste by putting the barrel in a backpack, travelling to the Dumping Grounds after closing, and moving it from BACKPACK to GROUND. Return to the shop and confirm that you are leaving the item behind. Georgio can return discarded waste, so inspect the shop afterward and repeat the disposal trip if the barrel comes back.

Ordinary selling and garbage collection are not reliable substitutes for that trip. A barrel has no resale value and occupies a large part of your working grid. The useful solution is to plan the transport and verify the result, rather than leaving it in the Trash Can and repeatedly paying for cleaning.

Recognize the cost of accepting a barrel

A Radioactive Waste barrel occupies a 3 × 4 area, or twelve cells. Its base value is zero, and it cannot be treated as ordinary customer merchandise. That makes it different from an unwanted item you can simply offer to the next buyer.

The immediate payment associated with the Corporate Waste Manager is payment for taking responsibility for the waste. It does not turn the barrel into saleable stock. When judging his offer, count both the money received and the space that remains blocked until you remove the item.

PropertyDisposal implication

Size of 3 × 4 cellsLeave a matching area in the transport inventory

An otherwise empty backpack may still need its contents rearranged to create the correct shape. Twelve scattered free cells are not the same as a clear three-by-four rectangle. Check the layout before closing, when moving other items around is easiest.

Prepare the backpack before leaving

Find the barrel on the counter or in its temporary storage location. Drag it onto the backpack icon and make sure it actually transfers into the bag you intend to take. The key check is the visible barrel in that backpack, not merely an empty space where it used to sit.

Use a backpack with enough room for the full item. Clear lower-priority goods from the transport bag if they prevent the barrel from fitting. This is especially important when you were planning a scavenging visit anyway and have already filled the bag with tools or items to carry home.

Before leaving, inspect three things: the correct backpack is selected, the waste is inside it, and you have not accidentally packed something you intend to sell instead. The Dumping Grounds interface distinguishes carried items from ground items, but that distinction only helps if you brought the right cargo.

Keep any additional waste in a place you can identify for a later trip. Removing one barrel does not remove the rest of an accepted shipment. The number you accepted and the number successfully transported are separate counts that are easy to confuse on a crowded counter.

Backpack (Basic)

Leave enough contiguous space for the waste barrel.

Leave the barrel at the Dumping Grounds

Close the store and choose Leave the Store. Select the backpack containing the waste, then choose the Dumping Grounds from the available destinations. Inside the location, find the barrel in the BACKPACK section.

Move the barrel into the GROUND grid. The ground also needs enough space for its full shape, so inspect the destination area if the drag does not place it. Do not stop after selecting the item or moving other goods around; the waste must visibly be on the ground side.

Choose Return when you are ready to leave. The game warns that objects left on the ground will be lost. For this specific barrel, that is the intended outcome. Confirm the warning after checking that the items you want to keep are still in the backpack.

The complete sequence is:

  1. Load the waste into the backpack at the shop.
  2. Close and leave with that backpack selected.
  3. Enter the Dumping Grounds.
  4. Move the barrel from BACKPACK to GROUND.
  5. Check that valuable carried goods remain in BACKPACK.
  6. Return and accept the warning about abandoned ground items.
  7. Inspect the shop on the following day.

That final inspection matters because leaving an item behind and having it stay gone are different outcomes when Georgio's return event intervenes.

Radioactive Waste

This is the barrel to transfer onto the Dumping Grounds grid.

Handle Georgio returning the waste

Georgio can retrieve something you left at the Dumping Grounds and bring it back as though it were forgotten property. If he returns the barrel, this does not mean that you failed to transfer it from the backpack. It can be the item-return event occurring after a successful abandonment.

Collect the returned barrel and prepare another disposal trip. The documented disposal sequence uses a second visit after his return. Put it back into the backpack, move it onto the ground again, and confirm the departure warning as before.

Check the window ledge and the shop inventory rather than looking only at the exact counter cells the barrel occupied previously. A returned item may appear where Georgio leaves it, so an empty original position is not enough to confirm that the waste is gone.

You can make only one Dumping Grounds trip per night. If the barrel returns the next day, allow for the next available evening instead of trying to solve it with another immediate departure. This makes the return event a scheduling issue as well as a storage issue.

After the repeat trip, inspect the shop again. Keep the process tied to the actual presence of the barrel. Georgio appearing later as an ordinary seller does not by itself mean another waste return is taking place.

Understand why the Trash Can does not solve it

The Trash Can is useful for ordinary disposal, but Radioactive Waste survives the normal overnight collection. Paying for Janitorial Service does not make the barrel behave like standard rubbish. A cleaned storefront and a collected-garbage entry are therefore not sufficient evidence that this particular item has been destroyed.

If you temporarily put the barrel in the Trash Can to free counter space, remember where it is. That can reduce immediate clutter, but it does not finish the disposal task. Retrieve it for transport when you are ready to leave.

Do not repeatedly pay for cleaning solely to test whether the same method will finally work. Once the barrel remains after collection, switch to the transport route. Repeating an unrelated service adds expense while leaving the storage problem unchanged.

Older disposal suggestions also describe throwing away an entire storage container with the waste inside. That is an expensive workaround involving the loss of the container. The direct Dumping Grounds route avoids making a valuable storage item part of the disposal cost.

Evaluate the Corporate Waste Manager's offer

The Corporate Waste Manager offers 100 credits per accepted barrel, with choices involving one, three, or five barrels. The maximum listed payment is therefore 500 credits when all five are successfully placed. Payment applies to barrels that fit on the counter, so a full table can reduce what you actually receive.

Clear space before accepting if you intend to take the entire shipment. Five barrels occupy substantially more working space than one. The payment is immediate, while the responsibility for clearing that space continues until transport is complete.

The offer is easier to manage when you already have suitable transport and an upcoming Dumping Grounds trip. It is less attractive when your counter is crowded or your bag is carrying other goods you cannot conveniently move. Compare the offer with your current shop layout, rather than judging it only by the headline payment.

There is no need to treat accepting the largest quantity as automatically optimal. Fewer barrels can mean less cash but a manageable disposal job. The useful question is how much waste you can move without blocking the inventory you need for normal trading.

Plan repeated disposal with the Makeshift Reactor

The Makeshift Reactor starting perk creates another source of waste. Its reactor provides independence from the station's electricity supply, but maintenance and deterioration become part of the run. Radioactive Waste can be produced as that equipment deteriorates.

That changes disposal from a one-time response to a recurring maintenance task. Keep a transport plan available instead of assuming the first cleared shipment is the last barrel you will see. Reactor management and waste removal are related responsibilities, even though leaving a barrel at the Dumping Grounds does not repair the reactor itself.

Avoid building a precise waste-production timetable from one equipment state. Upgrades and condition matter to the reactor, while your immediate disposal decision depends on whether waste is currently present. Inspect the machine and the shop rather than waiting for a remembered night number.

Verify that removal is complete

Before treating the job as finished, look for the barrel in the backpack, counter area, temporary storage, Trash Can, and any location where a returned object was left. This is a short inventory check, not another payment or service purchase.

If the waste is still in the backpack, revisit the transfer step: it was not left on GROUND. If it appears after Georgio's visit, repeat transport with the returned item. If it remains in the Trash Can, ordinary collection has not removed it and you still need the Dumping Grounds route.

For several barrels, verify each one separately. A clear counter may only mean that the remaining waste has been moved into storage. The task is complete when the barrels you intended to discard are absent from your carried and shop inventories after the return event has been handled.
